Guide to downloading free music (Most of it is legal)
Sunday. 12.30.07 2:24 pm
I have a very large music collection. I'm not sure how big it is, but it's at least 30 GB, And I don't use P2P programs. And I can still find stuff I want. I'll probably add more stuff as I find it.

Search blogs for mp3's (Most of these aren't legal):
Elbo.ws
The Hype Machine
BlogDigger (Search by 'Media')
Google's Blogsearch

Sites that have free and legal music:
Free Indie
Epitonic
BetterPropaganda
eMusic's Free daily download (You don't need to be a member to download it)
List of albums that have free tracks on eMusic (Free tracks on eMusic. I'm not sure if you have to be a member to download them)
PureTracks Free Track Of The Week (You need to be a member to download)
Zunior.com (Free by-monthly mix with Canadian music on it)

Resource pages for music downloading:
Unofficial eMusic User's Wiki - Resources for Discovering New Music

1 Million Free and Legal Music Tracks

How To Download Free Music

Non-Legal:
File2HD (You can use this to rip songs off myspace profiles)

Communities on Livejournal.com. You have to be a member there, but there's a whole lot of music sharing communities on almost every genre imaginable (If you search by the interest 'sharing' you should come up with some, And they should have affiliates, which should give you even more. The possibilities are endless)

Music forums. Find an artist you like, Look on the forum for some type of upload thread. There is plenty there, And likely stuff you would like even if you've never heard of it, because the artist's forum your on, You already like. Similar music, People.

this is so cool. wondering what's next to feed my download itch when the government decided to slap a RM 250 k fine for illegal downloads.

I use Audacity
That works better for me because I can only record what I can hear, which means I choose exactly what I'm getting. The downside is that sometimes I can't find the song I want.

But it's still better! (legality questionable.)

renaye: Yeah, I mean with the legal downloads you might not be able to find exactly what you want for free, but it's still music...

middaymoon: Me too, When I can't find the download link for something (And usually when that happens, it means I can't find a place to listen to it, either), Or I want to rip audio off a youtube video... The audio player I have on my computer has a 'stream saving' plug in, so I can just find the url of streaming music and save it to my computer...

Wow, great post. I get all my music these days from bittorrent.
» dave on 2007-12-31 01:38:08

Thanks, Dave. That's a good way to get music too (I've seen many a rare albums I wanted, on torrents), But I can't download music with P2P programs or torrents or anything, so I figured I'd make a list of what I knew...
» spring90 on 2007-12-31 02:54:10

What can't you use P2P programs?
» dave on 2007-12-31 04:56:24

Because I was told at an early age that I wasn't allowed to use them, and if I wanted to use them I could get my own computer (Which I don't have)

About half of my family is/are going to be computer programmers, So my Dad's pretty strict about stuff like that.
» spring90 on 2007-12-31 05:05:13

Yeah, youtube rules.
I also tune in to SoundPedia for the more mainstream stuff. Though as of right now, they're "not streaming"...

:(
» middaymoon on 2008-01-01 11:43:59

Soundpedia's alright, I found when making playlist they only had about half the stuff I was looking for.. but half is better than nothing :P Another good site like it is Deezer.com

but it's still dangerous to download anything. I'm downloading on alternate weeks, all thanks to Odex, who decided to "apprehend" illegal downloaders by asking the downloaders to pay a fine to the company who only brings in the anime. Still a little affected by what Odex does, so I'm being careful, but I'll definitely bookmark the sites you've recomended for future downloads. Thanks!!

In the area of illegal downloads, you can't beat torrents. torrentz.com bookmarks all the major torrent sites. It's where I get most of my music.
